How to evaluate graded cards and sealed card products

A buyer-focused checklist for card identity, grades, holders, signatures, sealed packs, and packaging condition.

Identify the card before considering the grade

Match the set, year, card number, language, finish, printing, and artwork. Similar-looking cards can come from different releases with very different availability. For serial-numbered, relic, costume, or autograph cards, compare every printed identifier with the listing.

A numeric grade describes the grading company’s assessment of that submitted card. It does not establish rarity or guarantee a future value. Compare like-for-like sales and pay attention to the exact grader and label generation.

Check the holder and certification

Read the label carefully and use the grading company’s own certification lookup when one is available. The company name, grade, card description, and certification record should agree. Inspect the slab for cracks, chips, frosting, deep scratches, or signs that it was opened.

Autographed items need an especially clear description of what was authenticated. A card grade, an autograph grade, and an autograph authentication are separate claims. Do not assume one includes the others.

Read sealed-product wording literally

Factory sealed, open box with sealed packs, and complete but opened describe different conditions. Ask which seals remain intact and what contents have been verified. Photos should show corners, seams, security tape, dents, fading, and any price stickers.

Keep cards away from humidity, ultraviolet light, and PVC storage materials. Protective cases reduce handling and shelf wear, but a case by itself does not authenticate what is inside.
